Hiring human capital in a post Covid world

Post Covid Hiring

We have adapted to work in a way unthinkable before the pandemic. Disruption to those employed in professional services is however less onerous than many other industries for which we can be grateful. Predictions made on post Covid working range from offices returning to full capacity to never being full again. Scenario planning being modelled by commercial Real Estate companies is revealing... whilst spare a thought for those employees without the luxury of home office space.

The relationship between an individual and his/her employer in professional services has changed and so too the relationship an individual has with ‘work’ and where and when that ‘work’ is undertaken. Elimination of the boundary between the workplace and the home has the potential to impact how we live our lives and presents a bigger anthropological challenge than merely work life balance.

Crewdson Partners make the following observations:

  • Information is a global commodity in the digital world; it does not matter where you sit

  • The online interview has removed geographic barriers and enlarged candidate pools Ethnographic studies show candidates are more likely ‘to be themselves’ when interviewed from home

  • The claim that non-verbal communication is missed by a camera-based approach has, so far, proved less of an issue than initially feared

  • Some claim that non-face to face communication lowers the risk that cultural mannerisms are misinterpreted

  • This begs the question whether face-to-face meetings are as important as we think or merely a generational bias in relationship building – just observe how teenage children communicate with one another

  • Leaders admit that whilst managing a business remotely over the pandemic has proved possible, even leading to greater efficiencies in some areas, growing a business requires a communal effort to communicate inspiration and learning

What Does This Mean?

  • The pandemic has accelerated the march of digitisation; grandparents now willing adopters

  • Financial services migrating from arts-based qualifications to prioritise those better equipped to manage and interrogate data; a task easily achieved remotely

  • Companies should encourage imagination and constructive disruption; "Nothing remains without change"
